james jarvis - onwards

James Jarvis is a British illustrator that was originally inspired by classic cartoons like Popeye. Taking animations into his own hands, Jarvis has been known to create his own 3D casts of characters and shoot them into their own imaginary worlds, giving each character their own role, and sometimes personality.

Most recognized for his action figures for AmosToys, his seld-created figures are typically characterized by simplistic bodies, large rounded heads. SImply put, Jarvis is an animator and illustrator that should be appreciated for the ages.

Nike has teamed up with Jarvis to create a small short film (hopefully more to come) of a simple runner. Watching the short, we follow the runner through various landscapes, creative animation and good music. The short film is called "Onwards."

brooke inman

brooke inman is an amazing artist. her mode of art is absolutely stunning. while it may appear simple at first glance, there is so much more to her work, that sometimes, it leaves you glancing for extended periods of time.

a recent piece, entitled "everything color circle" is self-explanatory, but exhilarating to look at anyway. makes you wonder if she does her work in this space, or if this is the space that fuels her creativity.

a thought from brooke's own mind:

Negotiating the detachment of the variety of subjects and relations that surface from one, I record my personal thoughts. This examination of introspection, persistently reflecting the interaction between the worlds we inhabit, is constructed out of rudimentary techniques with honesty and compassion. I hope that by including the petty selfish thoughts with the larger questions about humanity, the work to becomes a mirror, including everyone in my monotonous pursuit of understanding.

davin youngs

davin youngs is a photographer with a refreshing style. he calls his work an nvestigation of how the nature of his relationships with those he photographs is visually represented. all photos are taken in chicago.

magnus engsfors

magnus engsfors is a norwegian designer, director and animator.

his short film, suddenly, is an experimental shortfilm illustrating the moment of a mental collapse of a human being, using still photography, particles and lights, and a pretty surreal choice of background music.

khoda

what if you watch a film and whenever you pause it, you face a painting? this idea inspired reza dolatabadi to make khoda. over 6000 paintings were painstakingly produced during two years to create a five minutes film that would meet high personal standards. khoda is a psychological thriller; a student project which was seen as a ‘mission impossible’ by many people.

this is a little dated, but nonetheless, something you need to spend a few minutes and watch this girl go to work. it's quite magical.

toilet paper rolls

yuken teruya is an artist who's main motif is to manipulate everyday objects with hope to transform their meanings to reflect on contemporary society and culture. cutting trees out of paper bags and cardboard toilet paper rolls, he goes on to develop intricate pieces of art embodying a small and enchanting world of its own, all to relate to a more broader concern. each project, be it a paper bag or a roll, shapes of trees are created without adding or removing anything, but just the cutting and folding from the paper on the bag or roll itself.

on a higher note, teruya uses his work to explore issues around growing consumerism of contemporary society, depleting natural resources and other problems associated with globalism. teruya also has a passion for addressing threats aimed at local cultural traditions and identities.

truly design

truly-design is a pretty sick collective out of italy. at one time, four street artists, rems182, ninja1, mach505, and mauro 149 were all individual artists but good friends. realizing they all had a strong passion for the same works, street art and everything revolving around it.

they consider themselves a artistic collective that specializes in corporate identity, logo design, aerosol art, mural and canvas painting, interior decoration and artwork.

it's been a slow trend, but the corporate world has finally been opening its door to the urban world where a creativity has evolved to reach new levels that were previously not thought of . the new thought leaders in creativity are no longer the top-notch creative directors in suits.

counter-culture is the new pop culture.

and the people in hip-hop, indie and urban worlds who were once difficult to find, and hiding under a rock...are now the people we look to for creativity.

cats like truly-design nearly define that model, doing work for nike, dc shoes, the european institute of design, fiat, the european union, budweiser and many more.

lamborghini countach

ten years ago, richard moriarty picked up a black lamborghini countach for $60k.

he drove it for 10 years, but now, with a poor engine, and having to always have the car towed, he has retired it.

on his wall.

moriarty hired a 70-ton crane to lower the italian whip into the skylight of his living room. the countache will hang over a solid glass staircase leading to moriarty's wine cellar. The car will also plug into the home's electrical system so its inside lights can be switched on.

moriarty, who's family developed south coast plaza in southern california, has done other outlandish projects in previous homes, such as an indoor rifle shooting range, bowling alleys, and a 28 foot high interior waterfall. in his current newport mansion being constructed, moriarty is using $2million worth of steel and concrete to develop the home that will overlook all of newport's back bay. but this piece of art, is as he notes, "one of a kind."

but apparently, he isn't satisfied. "i want to stencil some tire marks on the wall," he said. "seriously."

artist banksy, famous for putting artwork in unexpected places at unexpected times with a message of substance all around the world is definitely a mystery. now on the net, there's a peculiar video put together that basically shows the public opinion about banksy himself... check it out.

adrian tomine

adrian tomine is mostly known for his comic strips in the new yorker entitled "optic nerve." typically simple illustrations, tomine's work is typically comical masterpieces with precise detail in all his sketches.

a couple really good sketches have resurfaced on booooooom. can't help but appreciate the piece above, "sneakerheads."
