ryan leslie - transition

The transition doesn't refer to his music. Instead, the singer says his sophomore disc was inspired by "a summer of secret love." After that fling ended, the result became "Transition": an 11-track set full of futuristic R&B tunes that finds the 31-year-old R&B-crooner sweet-talking his sweet hopeful. (AP)

pee wee herman

talk about throwback. pee wee herman is back. the 1980s comedian paul reubens is bringing pee wee back. tickets went on sale today for a november til who knows when it'll stop live show at the fonda theatre in los angeles. don't know if it's reubens attempt to make himself relevant again, or making pee wee relevant again...but needless to say, this live show should be quite the wonder.

taken from the pee wee site:

Let the fun begin! Pee-wee Herman is inviting you – and all your friends – back to Puppetland. Come join Pee-wee, Miss Yvonne, Cowboy Curtis, Jambi, Chairry and all your favorites, live on stage.

Re-imagined, re-invented, and nuttier than ever, “The Pee-wee Herman Show” will be LA’s theatrical event of 2009, with its live-action cast and puppets galore!

lusine

the folks over at ghostly international describe lusine the best. the man known as lusine has been producing his visceral, melodic strain of abstract electronic music for 10 years now.

i'm not even going to try to describe what type of melody he reveals through himself. listen to it for yourself.

this woman's work

had i been active with posts the past few weeks, i would have probably only been talking about maxwell lately. his new album is just nearly flawless.

take "this woman's work" an older track by maxwell and put it into visual choreography, and you really get something pretty magical. i can't say i have ever watched the show so you think you can dance, but this video shared to me by a friend is something else.

ne-yo story

i'm a big fan of ne-yo...his music, his writing, his voice...and his videos have been pretty well put together as well. this video story is the connection of two tracks off "year of the gentleman." it starts with "part of the list" and ends with "mad."

and while the end of the first video connects with the second...i dont fully understand the connection of the videos, with the girls and the fight, etc. makes me wonder.

hm...

mc hammer flash mob

kind of randomly interesting. a bunch of people in gold mc hammer pants decide to flash mob at a skinny jeans sample sale.

wale - family affair

wale's "chillin" video came at the beginning of the month. and just a few days ago, a second video came out for the track "family affair."

this track, a little bit more serious and real than chillin, features the story of 3 people. check it out.

tone matrix

came across this on another blog. it's pretty unbelievably fantastic. it's called the tone matrix, developed by andre michelle. http://blog.andre-michelle.com

it's described rather simply: simple sinewave synthesizer triggered by an ordinary 16step sequencer. each triggered step causes a force on the underlaying wave-map, which makes it more cute.

might sound a little odd...but try it here. turn those speakers on.

going in step with the previous post...check out this cat on the violin with the dj in the back, putting together some perfect melodies for some classic hip hop tracks.

flutebox & beardyman

some of uk's finest beatboxers. i don't think it gets any better than this.

the best is the last piece when they do it together. "the only thing that they had to protect themselves against the beasts of the jungle is that most fundamental of human capacities...rhythm."

5.19.2009

dark night of the soul

here's another pretty spectacular album.

it comes out next week. it's definitely been called one of the most mysterious projects of 2009. a little odd for an album, i know. but check it. it's been this top secret collab between danger mouse (grey album, gnarls barkley) and mark linkous of sparklehourse (does a lot of production for radiohead). and somehow, they pulled in gangster filmmake david lynch in to put together a really interesting album. it's a very acquired taste per se, but definitely worth the listen.

it's pretty crazy. so the album is supposed to be released with a book of photos by david lynch. but there's a bunch of legal disputes between multiple labels and there's even discussion that the album may never be officially released. but they are going to release the book of photos with a blank recordable cd. the cd's will be labeled "for legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. use it as you will."

here's an article on NPR that talks about the album, and how it developed. the album is also streamed on this site.

you can also check out the project's official website: http://www.dnots.com/

new drake

canadian rapper and famed actor from degrassi, drake is making a lot of noise this year. arguably owning one of the best mix tapes out right now, he's put out one more...the drought is over.

the official album, thank me later is slated to come out in 2010 or earliest next christmas., being produced by jay-z and lil wayne.

you can download the mixtape here: the drought is over

5.05.2009

pretty wings

it's been eight long long years since maxwell has put out a track. in 2001, he was known for the track "this woman's work" and somewhere between then and 1999, he put himself on the map with the remarkable single "fortunate."

things have changed since then, with the afro gone, but the neo-soul is there. maxwell is finally back. with an album slated for july, entitled "BLACK" maxwell has just released his first single in - i'm going to say it again, because maxwell is a musical genius - eight years. and it's about time.

and honestly, after listening to this track, it was definitely worth the wait. just last week he released the single and video, which in itself has it's own artistic essence even without the track. check out the video for "pretty wings."

sneakerpimps

if you're in la this weekend, this is where you should be.

stars and stripes project

this is unreal. adrian champion, a hip hop head tells a story on his site of how he came across the white stripes later than most people, and was fully enamored by their music. being a fan of hip hop, he realized he needed to do something so other hip hop fanatics who would maybe not even know who the white stripes were...would be educated.

so he did it. with samples and remixes.

with jay z, nas, mop, mos def, pharoah monche, busta rhymes, kanye west, redman, eminem, common, outkast, biggie and tupac. check out the trailer here:

you can download the album at www.starsandstripesproject.com

look up in the sky

check out lupe giving michigan a small taste of what the new album "lasers" is going to sound like.

hottest in the hood

this very well could be the hottest rap track of the year.

Red Cafe has been slowly on the come up with paper touching remix and various features on big new york street singles such as conglomerate by busta and big baller by mach 10.

Red Cafe signed with Akon last year to Konvikt Music and just recently finalized a joint venture that will land him with both Akon and now Diddy's Bad Boy Record Label.

Check the Remix Preview in the Youtube Below.

There will be 3 remix releases similar to Busta Rhyme's Touch It record.

The First Remix Features: Jadakiss, Diddy, Rick Ross, Fabolous, and OJ da Juiceman (who unfortunately ruins this particular remix)

you can get it here

wale gettin it

if you haven't listened to any of wale's mixtapes, then you are slacking. this dc native totally gets it, and his music is pure. his lyrics are eloquently on point. and he just is straight up dope across every board.

he's got two mixtapes circulating right now, everywhere. you've got "the mixtape about nothing" and "100 miles and running" both equally good in their own eclectic right. his album is supposed to be released this coming summer, entitled "attention deficit."

dude is currently on tour, and has a track getting major play on all the radios, "chillin" featuring lady gaga.

last night, he kinda leaked some info about his upcoming album...and needless to say he's got a lot of people on the album. here's just some of the few people he's got on the record:

- qtip
- jazmine sullivan
- k'naan
- melanie fiona
- joe budden
- bun
- cool and dre
- colin munroe
- tre and ucb

and there's still more out there. pay attention to this man...he's going to be making some news.

james jarvis - onwards

James Jarvis is a British illustrator that was originally inspired by classic cartoons like Popeye. Taking animations into his own hands, Jarvis has been known to create his own 3D casts of characters and shoot them into their own imaginary worlds, giving each character their own role, and sometimes personality.

Most recognized for his action figures for AmosToys, his seld-created figures are typically characterized by simplistic bodies, large rounded heads. SImply put, Jarvis is an animator and illustrator that should be appreciated for the ages.

Nike has teamed up with Jarvis to create a small short film (hopefully more to come) of a simple runner. Watching the short, we follow the runner through various landscapes, creative animation and good music. The short film is called "Onwards."

libby cataldi

though simply designed, another taacit project comes completed for libby cataldi, author of a new memoir set to release at the end of this month. the memoir tracks the story of libby and her son, jeff through his drug and alcohol addiction.

the site was not difficult to design, but working with 2 people simple inspired by growth, an emotional journey had to be documented within the site. while the aspirations for creative design are always the goal, spreading the message of growth and energy was definitely the task in designing libby cataldi's site.

the book is entitled, stay close: a mother's story of her son's addiction.

you can get more info on the book, and pre-order at the site.

chester french's album dropped yesterday, and it's superb. these two harvard school kids from boston have been making a lot of noise with their mixtape a couple weeks ago, and now their debut album off of pharrel's star trak records.

ryan leslie already made a video for this track...but he made another one, simply because he had another idea, and wanted to do it. this time around though, there was no budget for it...so he produced, directed and created it on his own...midway through the project, he pulled tyson beckford into the project to help direct it.

check it out.
